Who are genetic counselors?

Genetic counselors are an important part of the healthcare team. They assess one's risk for certain hereditary conditions, help their patients choose the best genetic test, and integrate genetic test results into a patient's life.

Specialities

All genetic counselors receive specialized training in multiple specialties. Most genetic counselors further specialize in one area of healthcare after their training. There are many specialties in which genetic counselors work. A few common areas in which you may meet with a genetic counselor are described below.

Preconception and prenatal genetic counseling typically take place during family planning or once you are pregnant. it allows you to learn more about how genetics may impact your future children and create a plan for your conception and pregnancy.

Pediatric genetic counseling aims to empower parents about their child's rare disease or risk for developing a rare disease. It helps parents understand how such conditions happen, if they may happen in other family members, and how it may impact their child's life and healthcare.

Cancer genetic counseling provides and opportunity to evaluate your risk for developing a hereditary cancer as well as management for those at increased risk.
